Capitalism has an image problem. While “the greatest economic engine ever created”, as Forbes editor Randall Lane calls it, has helped create immense wealth and pull billions of people out of poverty, younger generations aren’t convinced anymore. Against the backdrop of a climate crisis, rising economic inequality and a looming recession, under 30s are turning away from capitalism. Back in 2020, Forbes surveyed 1,000 young American adults and found that 47% approved of socialism, while only 46% viewed capitalism positively.

We at Forbes are convinced that capitalism is still the right way to go. But if we take these concerns seriously, we need to rethink what capitalism should be. How can we make the economy more sustainable, without giving ESG ratings to companies that are destroying the environment? How can we make it more inclusive, without leaving behind those that actually achieve the best results? How can we make it more fair, but still make sure that getting rich isn’t something to be ashamed of?

At the Forbes Money Summit, we will bring together the young and the old, the skeptic and the optimistic, the can-doers and the naysayers. And with them, we will discuss how to combine purpose and profits as individuals, as companies and as a society. Because if we create just a little friction – and bring the right people together in one room – we can find solutions on how to create an even better version of capitalism. And make some money at the same time.
